Dogs in the archive: A roundtable discussion on animals and queer history

, 5:30PM – 7:00PM

How might attention to dogs expand understanding of histories of gender and sexuality? What can it add to debates about the intimate complexities of the past and their legacies? This roundtable discussion brings into conversation scholars working on the queer histories of canine-human coexistence from premodernity to the today. Participants will introduce their own projects, followed by a discussion about the queer gains and challenges of exploring the relationship between human and non-human animals across time.

Featuring:

  • Fiona Anderson (Newcastle) on HIV/AIDS and the queer canine imaginary
  • Heike Bauer (Birkbeck) on dogs and Sapphic history
  • Bob Mills (UCL) on Ganymede’s dog in pre-modernity
  • Julie-Marie Strange (Durham) on dogs and modern British history
